Special Education Needs
We want all girls to receive the very best possible education. Our aim is to help each and every pupil to develop to their full potential, bearing in mind their individual needs and abilities. We recognise, however, that all children are different and may have very different needs.

Special educational needs might mean:

Children with learning needs across the curriculum;
Children with specific learning difficulties;
Children with physical or sensory needs;
Children with behavioural or emotional needs;
Children who are able and talented

or a combination of these needs.

The school has a set procedure for identifying and assessing the special needs of individual pupils. This includes formal testing at age 11, reports from the junior school, teacher assessment, the views of parents, assessment by an external agency and the views of pupils themselves.

Girls with special educational needs are helped in a variety of ways:

As well as receiving information from primary schools and level 2 NCT tests, they are tested very soon after coming to school and these CAT scores are used to ensure they are in the correct groups for their needs.

Parents are contacted early in their daughter's life in Broughton Hall and their needs are discussed with the SENCO and any outside agencies which already have an involvement with a pupil. There are regular reviews for statemented pupils.

Students take part in the Opening Minds alternative curriculum in Year 7. This is themed project work, allowing a variety of outcomes, designed to address the 'Preferred Learning Styles' of the students. The teaching is 'multi-sensory', appealing to all learners.

Successmaker is used in both English and Maths to help the girls improve literacy and numeracy skills.

Students in Year 9 are involved in Skills Club at NHS hospitals, with instruction from professionals to prepare them for their option choices and help develop their study skills.

Year 11 Students attend Assisted Learning Classes after school with the SENCO to complete coursework and classwork.

The Educational Psychologist delivers a variety of group work including Developing Social Skills and Anger Management.

Sixth form pupils help girls with reading during lunch hour.

Girls are assessed for cognitive, social, behavioural and emotional needs and we endeavour to help in all these areas, using expert help from outside if deemed necessary.

Girls are taught in small groups to enable them to develop faster and they have the help of Learning Assistants. We also have Learning Mentors who can help girls who have problems in school.
