Former British athlete Derek Redmond visited Broughton Hall recently to give a motivational speech to years 10 - 13.
Below are some pupil comments following Dereks speech.

Derek Redmond is the most inspiring person I have ever met! His speech was very touching and at the end of it, I am sure not just me but all of us who were present were very motivated and inspired by him. It made us all think positive and enthusiastic about our future. He made us think and say to ourselves "I CAN DO IT!"

Derek Redmond isn’t a very simple to describe. He is a person who had his ups and down’s in life, however never gave up succeeding. His speech was definitely motivational and inspirational. It made me think how precious life is and that anyone could go and do a career of their choice. However, the most important think is the commitment you put into it. There’s no point choosing a career and not bothering to put effort into it. Derek definitely showed us how committed he was. One quote that I can still remember of what he said was that “Whatever aims you have, believe and you can achieve it”.
This quote struck me so bad, it made me think deeply about the route I was about to take with university and the career I wish to pursue in the future. Derek didn’t just show us his happiest moments in life which was winning the gold medal in 1991 for Great Britain in the 4X400 men’s relay, however he even showed us the down side. Although he didn’t get into the final for the race in 1994 due to his injury, he was so committed to cross that finishing line. He was so in pain that he hopped to the finish line. His dad watching this came over to the racing line had hold of his hand and helped him cross that finishing line. I was in tears at the end of the video but it’s because he showed his commitment and that he would do anything and I mean anything to succeed.
