Inter Action
Inter-Action: Sections Européennes and Specialist Schools Broughton Hall High School and Lycée Louis Aragon Lyon
Project summary:
Students from Broughton Hall High School Liverpool and Lycée Louis Aragon Lyon will be involved in an online activity to introduce each other. After that, we will be working together on short term projects (News forum, bilingual survey, quiz, Press Pack, virtual exhibition, Webzines, Radio show, 3D film making, Blogging and pod casting and eventually video conferencing) using our school VLE platform Moodle as well e-Twinning desktop/twin space.
Students will meet on a regular basis alternating preparatory sessions with online discussions.
This project will run using ICT and Multimedia tools. During this Project, students from both schools will be using two types of tools: communicative and collaborative tools. As these projects may involve using pictures and videos, only those students with permission from parents/guardians will take part in the activities. Otherwise parents or guardians will have to sign a consent form.
A Charter for Partnership Schools to be signed by the staff involved in the programme and the head teacher. The charter has already been returned to the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust.
Students will be divided into groups and a rota will be drawn up for the groups to meet with similar groups of French students. It has been agreed that the sessions could not be organised as a lunch time school club because of the lunch time arrangement in Lycée Louis Aragon. This will only affect video conferencing.
Small groups are ideal as it will maximise the benefit for everyone. Student will talk about themselves, hobbies, regions, local customs, cuisine, school life/ subjects as well as their taste of music in either the Target language or their native language. The first correspondence will get underway with creative activities. Students may want to introduce each other using a speaking Avatar, a picture, a song, a piece of music or art. For more information see Inter-action on Moodle Languages section.
Each school will take in turn to present a topic. On each occasion the receiving School will complete a listening or reading comprehension activity.
Participants: • Class or age range targeted: 11-16 year old students from Lycée Louis Aragon Lyon and 13-16 year old students from Broughton Hall High School Liverpool. • Number of participants: 30 pupils from Lycée Louis Aragon Lyon and 30 pupils from Broughton Hall High School Liverpool. • Special requirements: The need to be registered on e-Twinning platform was discussed with the coordinator of Lycée Louis Aragon Lyon Mme Eléonore Pamart. • Inviting participants from Lycée Louis Aragon to access our school VLE platform as guests was very welcome. • Enrolment key will be required. • Teachers and students exchange (Mobility to share good practice and expertise)
Objectives: Outcomes at the end of the project:
This project will prioritise the development of pupils’ skills, confidence and independence in reading, speaking, listening and writing, including opportunities to use language creatively in a range of contexts.
It is an ideal way of practising French and introducing the knowledge of France into the curriculum as part of a general approach to citizenship and role of Britain in Europe. It will definitely promote the cultural understanding in both schools.
The main focus of this project will be on language learning through the use of ICT and Multimedia. Although it is subject tied, it could be cross-curricular.
Inviting teachers from Lycée Louis Aragon to visit Broughton Hall High School to share good practice was very welcome.
We will expect the students from both schools to find this experience rewarding and motivating as they will surely have opportunities to speak to real people of their own age, share similar interest and apprehensions about speaking and writing in a foreign language. This will help the needs of the National Curriculum by encouraging students to be more aware of differences in cultures. It will also give them opportunities to practise structures and vocabulary covered in class in a real context. Hence students from both schools will see real purpose in learning a language and increase motivation and eventually intake in sixth form.
Resources:
1. Communicative tools:
a) Blogging:
While blogging, students will be using practical IT skills and improving their writing in English or French languages.
By reading each other’s blogs, students from both schools will be able to find out what others are doing. They can choose different topics or ask various questions related to both cities and countries. Possible end product: Newspaper, online Magazine (Webzine). A Radio show, podcast short films. 3D animations or speaking Avatars.
Blogging can be used as a very appropriate tool for language learning too. It is a great way for students to learn about each others’ lives and to practise each others’ languages.
It can also be a way of consolidating learning by getting students in both schools to use their newly acquired language skills to write to each other.
b) Podcasting:
Students can record a podcast( like a radio show) where they can include image files and videos (Vlogging)
Question and answer activities can be used. Students from both schools can record their answers in the target language using Audacity software to create MP3 files (eventually MusicDNA format will be used as well) and uploading them onto their blogs or they can use video blogging also known as Vlogging.
c) Video conferencing:
VC will give students from both countries a very good motivational factor as it can be a very powerful tool in language learning.
It will also raise cultural understanding by building friendships with native speakers from both Broughton Hall High School and Lycée Louis Aragon.
VC will enable students from both schools to interact with each other as an alternative to physical exchange visits. The aim of these activities will be to improve speaking and listening skills as well increase confidence in speaking a foreign language. Each student, from both schools, will have a VC LOG BOOK as a learning log of each session.
d) Skype:
Both partner schools will need to have a Skype account. Both students and teachers from both schools will be able to communicate on a regular basis.
All the above digital tools will help run an ongoing dialogue and long term relationship between both teachers and students from both schools. It will also help them share details about their lives in the target language.
These tools will certainly make students inquisitive about the culture and viewpoint of the partner school.
2) Collaborative tools:
a) e-Twinning website:
It will allow both Broughton Hall High School and Lycée Louis Aragon to set up own e-Twinning project space where they can share documents and planning, exchange classwork, run a message board and post photos or videos if possible.
The platform gives us a storage space for each project and supports a wide range of resources including movies, sound files, photos, galleries, web links, polls, forms, documents and presentations which can be created by teachers and students from both schools. Both French and English can be used on this platform.
b) Wikis:
Both schools can establish a wiki where students and their partners can work together to write articles, create magazines, 3D films on their home town and school. (Advertising/ brochure)
Students together with their teachers can compile a set of lessons to teach their languages to their partners. They can publish essays or reports to be communicated on by teachers and other students. They can also write about their favorite sports, music, books or films.
