Governing bodies are the key strategic decision making body in every school.  It is their job to set the school’s strategic framework and ensure that it meets all of its statutory duties.  Governors have a vital role to play in making sure every child gets the best possible education.

They have a responsibility for raising school standards through their three core functions:-

 
  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
  • Holding the Head Teacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils and
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.

In accordance with the 2012 Constitution Regulations the Governing Body for Broughton Hall Catholic High School reconstituted with effect from 1st September 2015. 

The membership of the new Governing Body comprises of:-

LINK GOVERNORS
Broughton Hall Catholic High School has a Link Governor system. A Link Governor is a governor appointed by the Governing Body to act as the link or liaison between the governing body and a specific subject, curriculum area or aspect of the work of the school. We also consider that Link Governors help the Governing Body to develop positive links with staff and create a visible and professional profile within the school.
 
  • Foundation Governors are appointed by the school’s Trustees - The Sisters of Mercy.  They have a specific role in preserving and developing the ethos of the school, including any religious character.  They must also ensure the school is conducted in accordance with the foundation governing documents.
  • Head Teacher is a governor by virtue of office.
  • Parent Governors are elected by other parents at the school.  Any parent or carer of a registered pupil at the school at the time of election is eligible to stand for election as a Parent Governor. 
  • Local Authority Governors are nominated by the Local Authority but appointed by the Governing Body.
  • Co-opted Governors are appointed by the Governing Body.  They are people who in the opinion of the Governing Body have the skills required to contribute to the effective governance and success of the school. 
  • Staff Governors are teaching or support staff who at the time of election are employed to work at the school.  Staff Governors are elected by school staff.

A Governing Body is required to have a register of Pecuniary Interests.  Staff and Governors of a school have an obligation to avoid any conflict of interest between their own affairs and those of the school.
